Course 148: Evaluation & Treatment
of the Lumbar and Sacroiliac Spine: Maitland Approach
SUMMARY: This
course is designed to assist the practicing clinician in the systematic
examination, evaluation and treatment of lumbar and sacroiliac joint dysfunction
emphasizing the use of the Maitland system. Manual treatment techniques
will be taught along with augmentive self-mobilization exercise and progression
to effective spinal progressive resistive exercise. The course will use
both didactic and hands on practical lab learning sessions. Participants
should come dressed to expose the spine and hips. Discussion of “common
sense evidence based practice” will be incorporated throughout the course.
PRESENTER: Frank J. Fearon, PT, DHSc, OCS, FAAOMPT
Frank Fearon is presently an Associate Professor of Physical
Therapy at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Georgia.
He is a graduate of Georgia State University’s entry level and advanced
masters program in orthopedic physical therapy where he completed his
residency in manual therapy. He obtained his doctorate in orthopedic physical
therapy at the university of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Additionally,
he is a board certified orthopedic clinical specialist and a fellow of
the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. He has
maintained clinical practice for the past 23 years. Prior to his academic
position, he developed and managed several orthopedic and industrial injury
outpatient treatment centers. He has particular interest in researching
the outcomes of spinal rehabilitation and is well known for numerous presentations
and publications on this topic.
OBJECTIVES: At
the completion of the course the participant will be able to:
1) Perform a comprehensive, subjective and objective examination of the
lumbosacral spine.
2) Accurately evaluate the examination findings to differentially diagnose
various low back disorders.
3) Apply appropriate manual mobilization/manipulation techniques as indicated
by the evaluation.
4) Appropriately make manual treatment decisions based upon patient response.
5) Integrate therapeutic exercise which augments effective manual techniques.
6) Progress a patient toward effective self management through exercise
which is appropriate to their diagnostic category
FORMAT: This
is a 16 hour course equivalent to 1.6 CEUs. CEU approval has been submitted
to chapters of APTA. Attendees are to be dressed out in lab clothes for
all sessions.
