Course 310: Introduction to Neuro-Developmental
Treatment
SUMMARY: This three
day course is designed to acquaint therapists with the Neurodevelopmental
Treatment (NDT) philosophy of treating children with cerebral palsy. This
approach to treatment originated with the Bobaths and has been updated
according to their wishes to keep current with new motor control theories
and treatment ideas. This is a hands-on course where participants will
work together in labs learning treatment ideas and sequences. The lectures
include information on skill development and the development of children
with spastic and athetoid types of cerebral palsy, evaluation, and treatment
planning. The course includes treatment demonstrations by the instructor.
PRESENTER: Marcia Stamer
Mrs. Stamer received
her Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Ohio State University.
Her intensive continuing education background includes training in the
Neuro-Developmental Treatment Approach (Bobath), the Advanced Baby Course,
and Maitland Approach to Spinal Mobilization. She is a certified Coordinator-Instructor
of the NDTA, Inc./Bobath Eight Week Pediatric Course in the Treatment
of Children with Cerebral Palsy. Marcia's teaching experience includes
many continuing education workshops on various pediatric topics, including
manual therapy, dorsal rhizotomy, gait, children with severe physical
involvement, and handling the various types and ages of children with
cerebral palsy utilizing the NDT approach. She has worked with children
in multidisciplinary center-based settings, school settings, outpatient
hospital care, and in ICF/MRs. Marcia is the author of the book Functional
Documentation: A Process for the Physical Therapist and Posture and Movement
of the child with Cerebral Palsy. Marcia is a member of the APTA and Pediatric
Section, the AACDM, and the NDTA. Marcia currently lives with her husband,
daughter, and son in Nashville, Tennessee. She teaches continuing education
courses related to children with cerebral palsy and consults with area
therapists in treatment settings. She is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor

at High Hopes, Inc. treating children in a multidisciplinary setting.
OBJECTIVES:
1) List 5 treatment
principles of the NDT philosophy
2) Analyze a functional skill in terms of biomechanical, neuromuscular,
sensory, and respiratory control
3) List 3-5 similarities/differences in the development of children with
spastic and athetoid cerebral palsy
4) Demonstrate at least 5 treatment ideas to change neuromuscular control
in children with cerebral palsy on an adult lab partner
5) Evaluate a child and plan a treatment sequence to meet a functional
goal
FORMAT: This
is a 24 hour course equivalent to 2.4 CEUs. CEU approval has been submitted
to chapters of APTA, ASHA and AOTA.
