# 440 Pharmacology Fundamentals for Allied Health Professionals

Patients undergoing physical therapy routinely take prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. These drugs and medications influence how and whether patients benefits from therapy programs. Thus, therapist knowledge of drug administration, actions, and adverse events increases the likelihood that safe and effective habilitation and rehabilitation outcomes will be achieved.

This course will examine drug families and drugs commonly used in medical practice and rehabilitation across the spectra of age, illness, disease, and disability. It will begin with foundational information examining how drugs are commonly administered, taken up, metabolized, and eliminated from the body. Course sections then focus on body systems that are treated with common pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. These sections will examine methods of drug and medication action, key adverse effects, and influences on patients undergoing physical therapy.
