#7345 New Considerations When Providing Services with Children Who Are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
With the advent of Early Detection of Hearing in Infants (EDHI) and advances in hearing technology, children with hearing loss are receiving intervention at earlier ages, and in a variety of environments, which has resulted in a shift in the course of “deaf education”. While “Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing” (D/HH) remains one of several low incidence populations, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), Occupational Therapists (OT), Physical Therapists (PT), and educators are expected to be highly qualified to provide services and communicate with them, regardless of the hearing devices or mode of communication they use. Since there is a multitude of factors to consider when serving such a small population of children, we will explore an easy-to-reference, alphabetical inventory of things to remember and assess when working with children with hearing loss, regardless of their age or stage of hearing.
