# 244 Vestibular and Balance Impairment Assessment & Intervention: A Lab Intensive Course
This new blended learning virtual/onsite two-part course will cover the functional anatomy & physiology as well as the pathology of the vestibular and balance systems across neurologic, orthopedic, and cognitive domains. Emphasis will be placed upon formulating a working differential diagnosis for central and peripheral mediated vertigo. Additionally, equal focus will be placed on understanding how to assess and treat BPPV arising from anterior, horizontal, and posterior canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis. For the onsite lab day, you will be guided by breakout hands-on labs and case scenarios, you will utilize and examine evidence-based assessment and intervention tools that are designed to effectively manage patients with easy and straight-forward diagnosis to those who have difficult-to-diagnose complex deficits which severely impair function. The instructor will disseminate information from clinical practice guidelines (CPG’s) for both Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo that will assist you in your practice. The philosophy for patients will be to recognize and respect the constants while adjusting and integrating the variables. The instructor also welcomes you to feel free to “present” any challenging cases from your own practices. The material presented in this course is intermediate with some advance concepts and is applicable to multiple clinical settings ranging from acute to home to SNF to outpatient.
#7244 Vestibular Differential Diagnosis: Central vs. Peripheral Etiology of Vertigo Summary:The purpose of this course is to review and understand how to determine if the etiology of your patient’s vertigo may be arising from the CNS or the PNS. Using fundamental information of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, physical and occupational therapy practitioners will be instructed how to identify telltale signs and symptoms and then categorize them into either central or peripheral vestibular diagnostic classification systems. This presentation will utilize anatomic illustrations, videos, and case-scenarios to demonstrate and summarize the clinical utility and immediate application of the material. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and questions/answers. (Intermediate Level)
#7417 Geriatric Balance Examination & Interventions Summary:
The purpose of this course is to enable clinicians to select and administer appropriate balance and fall examination and interventions for the aging adult. Therapists will be instructed how to perform reliable and valid functional outcomes measures for elders to identify mobility and balance impairments and to determine their risk of falls. A review of the evidence for the effectiveness of selected interventions to promote balance and reduce falls risk will be discussed. Clinicians will be able to design effective, evidence-based plans of care for elders with balance and mobility challenges. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and questions/answers. (Intermediate Level)
