#356 Pediatric Postural Control and Acquisition of Motor Skills... Includes Handling Labs

This one-day course explores key components of pediatric sensorimotor development with an emphasis on postural control and the acquisition of functional motor skills. Discussion will focus on assessment strategies, postural alignment, and the influence of center of mass and ground reaction forces on movement. Participants will learn to identify primary impairments and underlying causative factors that impact motor development. Developmental biomechanics will be examined in relation to both evaluation and treatment, with particular attention to muscle activation and movement efficiency. Hands-on lab sessions will emphasize facilitation of weight shift, transitional movements, and postural control from infancy through adolescence to promote more optimal movement patterns. Common gait deviations and alignment issues will be reviewed, including toe-walking and crouch gait. The course will also address impairments seen in children with low tone and cerebral palsy, highlighting their impact on function and participation. Instruction will be supported through lecture, demonstration, video analysis, group discussion, and case study application to enhance clinical reasoning and intervention planning.
