#7377 School-Based OT/PT 101 Foundations: From Caseload Survival to Educationally Relevant Practice
 
Part 1: Primer for OTPs / PTs Entering School-Based Practice 
This introductory course prepares occupational therapy practitioners who are new to school-based practice or transitioning from medical, outpatient, or pediatric clinic settings. Participants will learn the role of OT/PT in schools, the difference between medical and educational models, workload versus caseload thinking, service delivery options, documentation expectations, and how to avoid being reduced to “the handwriting therapist.” Current evidence supports expanding school-based OT/PT toward participation, inclusion, transition support, MTSS, and embedded collaborative models.  Course instruction method includes: Lecture, videos, question/answers.
 
Part 2: IEPs, Goal Writing, Collaboration, and School Team Practice 
This course takes a deeper dive into the practical skills school-based Practitioners need to function confidently on educational teams. Participants will examine present levels, educational impact, IEP goal writing, service recommendations, data collection, progress monitoring, and collaborative decision-making. Emphasis is placed on writing participation-focused goals, aligning OT/PT services with classroom routines, collaborating with teachers and related service providers, and communicating the value of OT/PT clearly to administrators and families. Recent research supports stronger Practitioner–teacher collaboration, embedded service models, and collaborative goal development rather than isolated discipline-specific practice.
