#7428 Emergency Department Physical Therapy Practice: Identifying the Role
Today’s healthcare environment is oftentimes referred to as “Practicing in Silos”. Physical Therapists in the acute care setting are no strangers to this concept as they are asked to be very conscious of meeting organizational productivity standards while simultaneously being expected to provide prompt patient-centric quality of care and recommending safe, appropriate, and universally agreed-upon post-acute discharge needs. “Silo-type PT practice is seen most often in PT-owned or Corporate-owned PT Practices far away from the immediate influence of a referring physician, nurse case manager, facility liaisons, and insurance reps. However, Physical Therapists (PT’s) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA’s) roles in the Acute Care setting in general and in the Emergency Department (ED) in specific, are seemingly under the influence of those aforementioned entities. Considerable focus of this course will involve how physical therapy practice may act as a magnet, bringing together several independent medical and healthcare providers through professional collaboration.
